Remembering My Mother

"Precious memories, unseen angels,
Sent from somewhere to my soul
How they linger, ever near me,
And the sacred past unfold.

Precious father, loving mother,
Fly across the lonely years,
And old home scenes of my childhood,
In fond memory appears."

I miss thee my mother!
Thy image is still
the deepest impressed
on my heart... (~Eliza Cook)

We are witnesses of resurrection every spring;
We shall witness our own when death gives us wings;
Then, we shall be transformed to eternal things.

(~C.S. Craig)

Dearest Mother,
there is a special room in my heart where your love resides, and whenever I need you, I go there. A year has passed but you are as close to me as ever.

I'm thankful for so many precious memories...
for the sound of your laughter that still echoes in my head,
for the dreams of you that come to me in the middle of the night,
for the parenting wisdom you passed along to me,
for the Bible verses you underlined in your Bible which bring me comfort today,
for the way that you loved me,
for teaching me how to cook delicious meals and keep a clean house,
for teaching me that the most important things in life are not things, for the hugs and kisses I remember so fondly before you tucked me into bed,
for your beautiful smile which always caused you to tilt your head in a most charming way.

George Washington was right... "all I am I owe to my mother."

"New Name, Same Great Taste!"

Well, I've changed the name of my blog! I'm no longer At Home in Sweden, or At Home in Virginia. Rather than changing my blog's name every time we move, I decided to change to something more permanent. (However, the address to my blog will remain the same as it was.)

Soooo,
welcome to Contented Journey...
the story of a traveling military wife, seeking contentment in life's journey, no matter where she lives or what her circumstances may be.

Join me - because I think we're all on that same road!

My Cup is Full

I just have to share this...
The freestanding birth center where our dear daughter was born has a Yahoo mailing list that I am a member of. In it, we share our birth experiences and support each other in our choices to either have babies at home or at the birth center. Today, Robin shared a link to her web page which tells the story in words and beautiful pictures of the day her baby was born at home. I was so moved by it, especially when I saw the picture of Robin's mother raising her arms in joy at the moment of the birth! Note: There are no "graphic" birth photos, just gorgeous black and white ones that all ages can enjoy.

It brings back such wonderful memories of the day our Clara was born. The birth of a child is a miracle! It is an emotional, physical, and spiritual experience. The incredible pain gives way to even more incredible joy. Days after Clara's birth, I clearly remembered the pain I felt, but as time goes on, it dims, until now it is hard to recall what it actually felt like. I know it hurt a lot, but it doesn't seem like it could have really been that bad now. What a loving Lord we have. He does indeed cause all things to work together for good.

Tears of joy ran down my face on Easter Sunday as I stood worshipping the risen Lord and glowing inside at the thought of my beautiful family standing next to me. My husband was holding our daughter as she slept in his arms, wearing her pink Easter dress, her tiny sandals on her feet, and a frilly headband that definitely stated in no uncertain terms, "I am a girl!"

My cup was full and overflowing, and I couldn't help but thank God for blessing me!

Will they PASS the test?

This year my boys are taking the PASS test (Personalized Achievement Summary System.) The main reasons I decided to go with this achievement test instead of the IOWA or Stanford was because it has been developed especially for homeschool families, and parents can administer the test at home. I had never heard of this test until I did a search on the internet, specifically looking for tests that I, a parent (not a certified teacher) could administer. It is similar to other achievement tests, measuring student's levels in the areas of reading, language, and math. Three states have officially approved this test for state reporting purposes (New York, North Carolina and Alaska.) The cool thing about this test is that the results will show not only how my children compare with the public school kids, but also homeschooled kids!!!
Check it out!

An American Family Association alert....another unbelievable development in the land of "political correctness."

"The Kentucky Board of Education has voted to take the first step in redefining how America dates time. The board voted to include a new secular system of dating the calendar, BCE (Before Common Era) and CE (Common Era), and added it to the BC (Before Christ) and AD (Anno Domini, Latin for "in the year of our Lord") method.

The new secular system of time dating will appear in the curriculum and other materials used by Kentucky educators. This new system is already being included in textbooks across the nation.

The new method will replace the birth of Christ as the dividing point in history. For example, the new system would change 2006 AD (Anno Domini) to 2006 CE (Common Era).

It also opens the door for the ACLU to find a liberal activist judge who will forcefully remove the use of BC and AD. The ACLU types will claim that the use of BC and AD are a violation of the First Amendment because it dates history based on the birth of Christ."

AFA is conducting a poll, asking if you think Congress should pass a law making BC/AD the official method of dating time.

Cast your vote.

My Thumb

Fiddle Dee Dee, Fiddle Dee Dum
I'm not going to stop sucking my thumb.
It's my buddy, it's my chum
And I will suck it till it turns numb.

Better than candy, better than gum
If you ask me nicely, I'll let you try some.
Leaves no mess
Leaves no crumbs
Tastes as sweet as a sugar plum.

Hi Dee Ho
Ho Dee Hum
I do not care how my teeth become
Even if Dad, even if Mom
Try to scare me, I'll not succumb.

I'm not quitting; I've just begun
To put up a fight to suck my thumb
It's my buddy, it's my chum
And comforts me when I feel glum.

It's a Wonderful Life

Life as a Marine wife is never dull. After a short time in Virginia, its time to move on. We are headed for Croatia in May! I wonder what it will be like there... Stay tuned to my blog and we'll find out together.

In the meantime, our family will be getting ready for the moving chaos that will overtake us this month. With a baby to also care for, it could get pretty hairy around here! May the Lord give us wisdom as we make plans and prepare for so many changes.

I am reminded of what Gandalf said to Bilbo,

"I am looking for someone to share in a great adventure that I am arranging, and its very difficult to find anyone."
