Our Last Croatian Outing

We are SO FAR away from Croatia now that sometimes I can't believe we were really there!

Our last "field trip" before we moved was to visit a Christmas tree farm about an hour away from Zagreb, in a region known as Turopolje. This area of Croatia is the place where the exterior shots of Fiddler on the Roof were filmed many years ago!
We didn't get a tree since we were moving before Christmas, but we did want to go on the trip and see some more of the beautiful Croatian countryside. (But if the truth be told, the real reason we wanted to go was to enjoy a pig roast at this restored 200 year old farmhouse!)

We also stopped to see this historical Turopolje church (see photo below). I don't remember much of what was said about this particular church. It was a cold and rainy day and I was very disappointed that we couldn't go inside!

One of the greatest treasures of the Turopolje region are its wooden churches and chapels. It is believed that this way of building started already in the Middle Ages and became more and more common in the years of Ottoman invasion and destruction. It was common in the 17th century to replace former churches (made from brick) with wooden structures. These churches and chapels are certainly most precious examples of traditional folk architecture. Only five wooden sacral buildings have been preserved till today.
